Meet pushes for need to sustain development

Centre for Reforms, Development and Justice in capacity as knowledge partners cos-hosted MESD 2012 – the 3rd International Conference on “Managing MNE Dynamics and Sustainable Development: Best Strategies, Practices and Models” from December 12-14, 2012 at NDMC Convention Centre, Sansad Marg, New Delhi.

The conference was attended by 30 delegates from nine countries including France, USA, Sweden, Morocco, Nigeria and more than 250 delegates from India participated in the deliberations over three days on the issues relating to sustainable development and the role of the multinational enterprises. The conference resolved unanimously that:

1. Sustainable development is required for creating livable society to ensure better quality of life.

2. There is an urgent need to make people all over the world aware of the need for sustainable development. NGOs, civil society and people at large will have to join hands together to raise their voice in the most democratic forms including protests to make the governments respond to the challenges of sustainable development by introducing relevant laws and providing fiscal incentives for the people and business.

3. The business schools should reorient their education. They should move away from shareholders oriented education and make it oriented towards the stake holders- consumers, people, nature and society at large. The managers trained through the business schools with different orientation will help them follow business strategies that are suitable for sustainable development.

4. Ethics has to be embedded in the laws of the land; corporate responsibility has to be the law and not just left the people and the business world.

5. The alternative models of business adopted by Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, Dakhina Kannada Milk Union and Community Friendly Movement (CFM) and Alcatel India provide the business models that ensure sustainable development. The conference urges the MNCS and other business to follow their models by using appropriate technologies and strategies.

6. Use of non- conventional source of energy should be popularized

7. Art and culture can be put to use to save our environment.

The conference was organized by Shaheed Bhagat Singh Evening College, University of Delhi as principal host in collaboration with ICN Business School (France), the CEREFIGE of the University de Lorraine (France), and the Georgia Tech Center for International Business Education and Research, Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA.
